Every Man’s Guide To Good Scotch

The right whisky is as important as the right wheels

Alan Peltier knows wheels. As President of HRE Wheels, wheels are one of his greatest passions in life. One of his other passions is scotch whisky, and in this he is a connoisseur. These whiskys are not the most expensive or exclusive, but give a few of them a try and you’ll be on your way to having a decent education in good scotch. Think of this list as a great primer on some of the best of the widely available varieties. Have fun and drink responsibly!

Macallan 12 yr – My favorite everyday single malt. An almost perfect scotch and a perfect Highland. You can never go wrong with this.

Laphroaig 10 yr – My favorite whisky. Islay single malt with the PERFECT amount of peetiness. Transports you directly to Scotland with the salt-spray of the ocean in your face.

Yamazaki 12 yr – I’m half-Japanese and I’ve been to this Suntory distillery so this Japanese single malt is very partial to my heart. Very solid. Sort of a Japanese Macallan 12.

Lagavulin 16 yr – A much more intense peetiness than Laphroaig. Not an everyday drink, as it is a bit of a kick in the face, but I love it.

Johnnie Walker Black Label 12 yr – I don’t usually drink blended scotches, but I happen to think Black Label is a fantastic scotch that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Forget the Blue Label, Black is just fine, thank you very much.
